1. Let Someone Know Your Itinerary
Always let someone close to you who is not traveling with you know your itinerary details. This way someone will always know where you were supposed to be in case something should happen. It is also helpful in case you need to know something about a flight or train you are on but cannot get the information quickly. This person may be able to help you over the phone.
2. Keep Your Belongings Close
If traveling for vacation, you may be very relaxed but do not let your guard down when watching your belongings. Many travelers and tourists are often targeted by pickpockets or thieves who are looking for a backpack or purse that is set down carelessly while the owner is distracted. Be sure to keep an eye on your stuff or have someone in your group keep an eye on your belongings if you need to step away for any reason.
3. Understand Where Dangerous Areas Are
Many places are beautiful to travel to but aren't always safe due to high crime rates or other tensions in the area. Be sure to do your research on crime rates and check with your hotel on which areas to avoid.
4. Get a Safe in Your Hotel Room
More than ever we are traveling with expensive items due to the number of electronics that we carry around. While a safe may cost a small fee to add to a room, it is worth it to secure expensive belongings so you don't lose them or risk getting them stolen.
5. Read Over the Rules of the Road
If you are traveling internationally, the rules of the road may be different than where you are used to driving. Driving in a different country and possibly on a different side of the road can be confusing, so it is important to understand the basic rules of the road so that you do not get in trouble with the police or cause any accidents.
6. Carry Small Amounts of Cash
Having cash with you when traveling is important to tip or handle any situations where credit cards are not taken. However, it is important not to carry too much cash with you as pulling it out to pay for something may draw attention and attract thieves. There are also products that help you stash your cash on your body that will go undetected.
